Featured Vendor: Zarling Farms
This week's featured vendor is James Zarling of Zarling Farms from Planiview, MN.
James has been selling at the market the last couple of months on his own. He is selling fresh produce. He currently has lettuce, tomatoes, radishes and eggs. Later in the season he plans to have chickens, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.
James is a fifth-generation farmer who started raising calves with his dad when he was 10 years old.
He believes people should come to the farmer's market because it is a good way for people to interact one on one with their local producers to benefit the local community and the local farmers in the area.

Customer Appreciation Day
Customer Appreciation Day is tomorrow at the Winona Farmer's Market. We will be having a special drawing of a goodie bag filled with donations from separate vendors at the Market Coordinator booth. Kappers Big Red Barn will also be selling ice cream cones.

Featured Vendor: Dante's Cookies
Dante of Dante's cookies is the youngest vendor at the Winona Farmer's Market. He is now 18 years old, but started at the market when he was only 15 as a means of employment. This is Dante's fourth year at the market.
He got the recipe for his cookies from his mother, but it has been passed down in his family since his grandmother. Local and organic ingredients are used in the making of the cookies.
Dante believes people are drawn to the farmer's market because of the sense of community involved in the market.
Dante said it started out strange being the youngest vendor at the market, but now he feels welcomed by the sense of community and the people in the market.

Featured Vendor: Earth-Be-Glad Farm
This week's featured vendors are Mike and Jennifer Rupprecht of Earth-Be-Glad Farm in Lewiston, MN. It is a family farm dedicated to producing healthy and nutritious food from the soil up. They raise grass fed beef and free-range chickens humanely and sustainably on their organic farm. They also have fresh cut flowers and sometimes produce from their farm.
Earth-Be-Glad Farm has been at the Winona Farmer's Market for 16 years.
The name Earth Be Glad came from a hymn in Mike and Jennifer's wedding that says, "This is my Father's World God reigns let the earth be glad."

Salad Recipes
Watercress, Radish
and Feta Salad
Taste of Life
3 cups of watercress washed and dried.
8 radishes thinly sliced
¾ cup of crumbled feta
2 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Remove any tough woody stems from watercress. Toss
watercress and radishes in medium bowl and add feta cheese. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice
then season with salt and pepper. Toss and serve.
Wild Rice and
Asparagus Salad The
Savory Way By Deborah Madison
1 cup wild rice
1 quart water
salt
1to 11/2 lbs of asparagus
2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
3 or 4 handful of nappa cabbage cut into squares, watercress
leaves or cilantro
Vinaigrette
2 scallions finely chopped Cook
rice in pot with water. Bring
1 tbsp orange zest to
boil and reduce heat simmering
5 tbsp orange juice until
cooked about 40 minutes. Drain
3 tbsp light sesame oil Trim
asparagus, slice off tips and cut
2 tbsp dark sesame oil\ tender
portion of stalk diagonally.
1 tbsp soy sauce Cook
in boiling salted water until
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar they
are bright green but slightly
1 tbsp grated ginger firm. Refresh under cold water and
2 tsp minced garlic drain
on towel.
pinch of sugar May
wish to use a varied rice but be
2-3 Tbs chopped rough cilantro aware
of differing cooking times.
Combine all vinaigrette ingredients. Taste and adjust
seasoning as needed. Combine rice,
asparagus, sesame seeds and toss with 2/3 of dressing. Use other 1/3 to
sprinkle on greens. Place rice on
platter and encircle with greens.

Featured Vendor: Simple Soaps for Simple Folks
This week's vendor is Shanna Wegman of Simple Soaps for Simple Folks.
Shanna produces soap, hand lotion and lip butter made from goat milk using certified organic base oils which means there are no dyes, pigments or hormones in the soap.
She started out in 2007 after receiving two goats from her husband (then boyfriend) and learning to make soap from her mother-in-law.
Shanna has been at the Winona Farmer's Market for four years. She started out at the Wednesday market and then started making the Saturday ones. She is at roughly every other Saturday market.
Shanna enjoys interacting with the vendors and customers at the market.
Shanna is located outside of Dover, MN.
